Increasing 'Basic Science Research Facilities' in Smart Campus Model
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 12th that it will sequentially hold groundbreaking ceremonies for the KAIST campus and POSTECH campus research facilities of the Institute for Basic Science.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the KAIST campus research facility will be held today within KAIST in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The government will invest 75.675 billion KRW to construct a research facility on a 17,000㎡ site with a total floor area of 25,529.06㎡ (1 basement floor and 6 above-ground floors) by April 2022. The POSTECH campus will also be built as a researcher-friendly research facility on a site of the same size, with a total floor area of 20,023.61㎡ (1 basement floor and 4 above-ground floors). The total project cost is 61.026 billion KRW.

Choi Doyeong, head of the International Science Business Belt Promotion Team, said, "The KAIST and POSTECH campus research facilities will be developed as smart campus-type spaces integrating research, exchange, and rest areas to attract excellent researchers and create a creative research environment." He added, "Through this, the region's basic science capabilities will be strengthened, and a virtuous cycle system for nurturing outstanding talent is expected to be established in connection with nearby universities and research institutes."
