[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] Global consumer spending on mobile applications in the third quarter reached an all-time high.
Mobile data analytics platform App Annie announced the "2020 Q3 Mobile Report" summarizing the mobile app market on the 15th.
In the third quarter, global users spent $28 billion on mobile apps. This is a 3.7% increase compared to the previous quarter's record high spending of $27 billion. Spending on non-game apps reached approximately $8.4 billion (about 9.66 trillion KRW), a 25% increase year-over-year.
Among consumer spending, the categories of games, photo and video, social, and entertainment accounted for the largest shares. On Google Play, the entertainment category was driven by video and live streaming apps such as "Disney+", "Twitch", "Globoplay", and "HBO Max". On iOS, the apps with the highest growth rates included comic app "Piccoma", "YouTube", "Tinder", and "AbemaTV".
The number of app downloads worldwide in the third quarter exceeded 33 billion, a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. Google Play accounted for 25 billion downloads, and iOS for about 9 billion downloads.
Meanwhile, in South Korea, 510 million mobile apps were downloaded during the third quarter. Among these, non-game apps accounted for 350 million downloads. Consumer spending rose 25% year-over-year to $1.48 billion (about 1.7 trillion KRW), with non-game apps exceeding $152 million (about 175 billion KRW).
The most downloaded app in South Korea was "Zoom Cloud Meetings". Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), usage of video chat platforms increased, pushing it up one rank from the previous quarter to first place.
