The Hyundai Motor Branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union stated in a press release on the same day, "We congratulate the new chairman on his inauguration in accordance with the new era," adding, "Indeed, it is now the era of Chairman Chung Eui-sun at Hyundai Motor. To survive the global competition brought by the 4th Industrial Revolution, labor and management must work together with proactive measures to strengthen Hyundai Motor's competitiveness." They further proposed a tripartite meeting, saying, "We need to jointly plan employment guidance including investment in the 4th Industrial Revolution and discuss how to fulfill the social responsibilities and roles as a national key industry on which millions of lives depend."
The union emphasized, "At the beginning of this year, with the launch of the executive team, we stressed the necessity of a tripartite meeting with the Chief Production Officer, CEO Lee Sang-soo, and the branch chief to eliminate the outdated labor-management relations, but there has been no response so far," and added, "Now that Chairman Chung has become the actual group owner, there is no reason not to hold a tripartite meeting."
They also pointed out, "While former Chairman Chung Mong-koo is credited with growing today's Hyundai Motor by pioneering overseas markets through aggressive marketing, there is also an evaluation that reckless affiliate expansion and illegal and irregular management practices have damaged the corporate image," and criticized, "In particular, labor-management relations were rigidly driven, strikes were induced every year, and union members were antagonized." They urged, "We hope the new chairman will understand his predecessor's achievements and faults well and become a respected manager."
They continued, "Hyundai Motor cannot advance with the old management style that antagonizes the labor union. Recognizing the union and its members as partners to move forward together is the future of Hyundai Motor," they added.
