Preparation of National Standards for Autonomous Vehicle Data Until the First Half of 2021
Launch of 'Autonomous Vehicle Data Standardization Committee' with Government, Local Authorities, and Industry-Academia-Research Participation
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The government and the private sector are jointly launching the establishment of a 'national data standard' to promote autonomous vehicle services. They plan to prepare a national standard proposal for autonomous vehicle data by the first half of next year.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 14th that the 'Autonomous Vehicle Data Standardization Committee' has been launched.
The committee includes more than 40 experts from government ministries such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Police Agency, local governments conducting autonomous vehicle demonstration projects, and private-sector experts from industry, academia, and research institutes.

For example, to implement vehicle collision prevention services, data such as vehicle location, speed, and time must be exchanged between vehicles. It is also necessary to establish standards to ensure compatibility of exchanged data and stability of data transmission.
The committee announced plans to prepare a national standard proposal for autonomous vehicle data by the first half of next year. It will operate in connection with the 'Autonomous Vehicle Standardization Forum' launched in November 2018 and form a separate working group of about 20 experts from industry, academia, and research institutes including Hyundai Motor Company and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute.
Additionally, the committee plans to discuss cooperation measures among the government, local governments, and industry-academia-research sectors to apply and spread autonomous vehicle data standards in the industry.
National Standards Essential for Expanding Autonomous Vehicle Demonstrations Nationwide

Since international and national standards for autonomous vehicle data have not been established, domestic autonomous vehicle demonstrations must refer to group standards from the U.S. and Europe.
Lee Seung-woo, head of the National Institute of Technology and Standards, evaluated, "The launch of the Autonomous Vehicle Data Standardization Committee with government ministries responsible for autonomous vehicle policies, local governments conducting demonstration projects, and industries creating businesses is a representative case of public-private standard cooperation."
