[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] It has been revealed that the number of sick leave days used by social service agents is four times that of active-duty soldiers. Their sick leave usage rate on Mondays and Fridays is 45.5%, indicating a high proportion of sick leave taken adjacent to weekends.
According to data submitted by the Military Manpower Administration to Kim Byung-gi, a member of the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea, over the past five years, the average number of sick leave days used by social service agents was 14.2 days, more than four times the average of 3 days used by active-duty soldiers.
The days on which social service agents used sick leave showed that the proportion of usage on Mondays and Fridays adjacent to weekends was 22.9% and 22.6%, respectively, totaling 45.5%. Tuesday accounted for 17.8%, Wednesday 17.9%, Thursday 17.7%, Saturday 0.7%, and Sunday 0.4%. In particular, the sick leave usage rate on Mondays and Fridays among managed social service agents such as entertainers, high-income earners, children of public officials, and athletes was analyzed to be 47.4%.

Representative Kim stated, "While it is natural to take sick leave when unwell, the fact that there is more than a fourfold difference compared to active-duty soldiers is undesirable in terms of faithful service and fairness," and added, "The high sick leave usage rate on Mondays and Fridays among social service agents also calls for management of service conditions."
