Musical 'Man of La Mancha' 15th Anniversary Performance Opens on December 18
Ryu Jeong-han, Jo Seung-woo, and Hong Kwang-ho as Cervantes/Don Quixote... Yoon Gong-ju, Kim Ji-hyun, and Choi Soo-jin as Aldonza
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The musical "Man of La Mancha," based on the Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes' "Don Quixote," will open on December 18 at Charlotte Theater.
"Don Quixote" is regarded as the world's first modern novel and the best-selling literary work after the Bible. Since its publication in 1605, it has been adapted into various forms such as opera, theater, ballet, and television shows. The musical premiered in New York in 1965 and made Broadway history by achieving 1,800 consecutive performances. After its premiere, it toured seven cities in the United States and was performed in many countries worldwide, including Madrid, Spain, the former Soviet Union, Israel, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, receiving much love. In Korea, it premiered under the title "Don Quixote" at the National Theater in 2005, marking the 15th anniversary of its licensed performance this year. Since the premiere, it has been performed eight times from 2007 to 2018.
In the ninth season of "Man of La Mancha," Ryu Jeong-han, Jo Seung-woo, and Hong Kwang-ho will play the lead role of "Cervantes/Don Quixote." Ryu Jeong-han, known as the "original Don Quixote," starred in the 2005 premiere of "Man of La Mancha" and has participated in five seasons so far. This time, he returns to the "Man of La Mancha" stage after five years since the 10th-anniversary performance in 2015.
Yoon Gong-ju, Kim Ji-hyun, and Choi Su-jin will appear as Aldonza, the beautiful lady in Don Quixote's fantasy. Yoon Gong-ju is the most frequent Aldonza actress in history and is participating in her fifth season as Aldonza. Kim Ji-hyun is challenging the role of Aldonza for the first time, and Choi Su-jin is taking on the role for the second time since the 2018 season.
Lee Hoon-jin and Jung Won-young have been cast as Sancho, Don Quixote's loyal and cheerful squire and eternal helper. Lee Hoon-jin has appeared as Sancho in every season since 2007, except for the premiere.

Seo Young-joo and Kim Dae-jong will play the charismatic Governor and the kind Innkeeper, respectively. Park In-bae will play Carrasco, the Knight of the Mirrors who appears to make Don Quixote face reality; Jo Seong-ji will play the Priest who worries about Don Quixote; Kim Ho will play the Barber; Jung Dan-young will play Antonia; and Kim Hyun-sook will play the Housekeeper.
