[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics is significantly increasing the initial supply of the Galaxy Z Fold2, which has received much higher praise compared to its predecessor.
According to industry sources on the 4th, the pre-order quantity for the Galaxy Z Fold is expected to increase to several thousand units per mobile carrier. This is due to increased foldable phone production capacity compared to last year and the expectation that demand will surge more than in previous years. The supply of the previous model, the Galaxy Fold, was limited to a few hundred units, causing severe shortages, so Samsung Electronics is reportedly planning to supply the successor foldable phone more stably. Mobile carriers are expected to secure more units than the initial supply of the Galaxy Z Flip, the second foldable phone, which was about 2,000 units.
An industry official said, "Last year, the quantity was limited to a few hundred units, so the supply was extremely low, but this time, several thousand units will be distributed more stably to carriers," adding, "Despite the high price, there is a greater chance to appeal to customers, and the improved completeness is expected to increase popularity."
Samsung Electronics will start pre-sales of the Galaxy Z Fold2 on the 11th. To boost early sales, pre-order customers and initial buyers will receive one of the new wireless earphones 'Galaxy Buds Live' or a 'Special Case Package' as a gift. Pre-order customers will also be provided with a one-year Samsung Care+ plan that covers damage, loss insurance, and on-site repairs. In the previous model, wireless earphones Galaxy Buds were included in the package, but this time only wired earphones are provided as standard, and gifts will be given only to early buyers.
A trade-in plan has also been prepared to encourage existing Galaxy Fold users to upgrade. Customers who return their old phone and purchase the Galaxy Z Fold2 can receive compensation up to 1 million KRW. This offer is limited to the first 10,000 customers from the 10th to the 11th. Users can access the Samsung Electronics website with their current Galaxy Fold, purchase the unlocked Galaxy Z Fold2 model, and then apply for the special compensation program.
With pre-orders starting on the 11th, Samsung Electronics and mobile carriers are joining marketing efforts to attract 'Galaxy Z Fold2' customers. From the 4th, Samsung will exhibit the Galaxy Z Fold2 at Samsung Digital Plaza and five Galaxy Studios for hands-on experience. LG Uplus plans to open a flagship store in Gangnam and set up a separate Galaxy Z Fold2 experience zone.
The official price of the Galaxy Z Fold2, launching on the 18th, is 2,398,000 KRW, the same as the previous Galaxy Fold. The cover screen of the Galaxy Z Fold2 has been expanded from 4.6 inches to 6.2 inches, and the main screen from 7.3 inches to 7.6 inches. Market research firm Counterpoint Research forecasts that while global sales of the Galaxy Fold were around 400,000 units, the Galaxy Z Fold2 will exceed 500,000 units.
