Extension of Free Usage Period for National and Public Land of University Happy Dormitories from 20 to 30 Years
Dormitory Fees to Increase After Free Period Ends
Expected Relief for Students' Burden
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The free usage period of national and public land for the Happy Dormitory, established by the Korea Private School Promotion Foundation, will be extended from 20 years to 30 years.
The Ministry of Education announced on the 18th that the amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Korea Private School Promotion Foundation Act was reviewed and approved at the Cabinet meeting.
The Happy Dormitory is constructed by borrowing funds from the Private School Promotion Fund, and the construction costs are repaid through dormitory fees. When the free usage period ends, the fees for using national and public land must also be paid through dormitory fees, making an increase in dormitory fees inevitable. The Ministry of Education estimated that when the free usage period ends, each student would have to pay an additional 12,000 KRW per month. With the extension of the usage period of national and public land for the Happy Dormitory project, the burden on students is expected to be somewhat alleviated.
