Hyundai Hydrogen Electric Bus to Run in Jeonju City Starting from the 30th
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Motor Company held a delivery ceremony for the first hydrogen electric bus at Jeonju City Hall on the 29th. The first hydrogen electric bus delivered on this day will be deployed on Jeonju city bus routes starting from the 30th.
The delivery ceremony was attended by key officials including Kim Seung-su, Mayor of Jeonju; Lee In-cheol, Head of Hyundai Motor's Commercial Vehicle Division; Kang Kyung-sung, Director of Industrial Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; and Kim Byung-soo, CEO of Honam Express. The delivery of the hydrogen electric bus is part of the 'Hyundai Motor-Jeonju City Hydrogen Electric City Bus Introduction MOU' signed in October last year. Jeonju plans to replace more than 15 large and retired city buses with hydrogen electric buses annually starting this year.
Hyundai Motor plans to sequentially supply hydrogen electric buses to transportation companies operating in Jeonju, such as Honam Express and Jeonil Passenger Transport, in line with Jeonju's hydrogen electric city bus introduction plan. The hydrogen electric buses are equipped with an improved fuel cell system that enhances performance and durability, allowing for approximately 450 km of driving on a single charge. Notably, the hydrogen electric buses operating in Jeonju feature exterior designs incorporating major symbols of Jeonju, such as Iseonggye, Hanok Village, Jeondong Cathedral, and Pungnammun.
One hydrogen electric bus can purify 4.863 kg of air per kilometer driven. Assuming an annual driving distance of about 100,000 km, it is calculated that a total of 486,300 kg of air can be purified. This amount corresponds to the clean air that approximately 85 adults (based on an average weight of 64 kg) can breathe for one year.
Jeonju City plans to deploy the first hydrogen electric bus on the existing Bus No. 103 route starting from the 30th. Bus No. 103 operates from the Jeonju Nursery to the Songcheon-dong terminal, and Jeonju expects many citizens to have the opportunity to experience the hydrogen electric bus.
In addition, besides the Wanju hydrogen charging station, the nation's first commercial vehicle hydrogen charging station built at Hyundai Motor's Jeonju plant in June, a private hydrogen charging station in Songcheon-dong, Deokjin-gu, is scheduled to be completed in September this year. Furthermore, Jeonju plans to expand commercial vehicle hydrogen charging infrastructure by installing an additional charging station in Wansan-gu next year.
