[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will hold the ‘2020 Artificial Intelligence Grand Challenge’ competition from the 27th to solve everyday problems using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 26th, the ‘Artificial Intelligence Grand Challenge’ competition is a challenge and competitive research and development (R&D) contest where participants compete with algorithms they developed to solve the given problems. It is characterized by selecting research institutions based solely on research capabilities, moving away from the traditional evaluation method focused on reviewing business plans.

This competition will proceed over four stages for three years until 2022 under the theme ‘Solve various regional problems using AI technology,’ with four tracks: various emergency situations (behavior recognition), violent situations (voice recognition), household waste classification (object recognition), and reducing power consumption through AI optimization and lightweighting.

Participating teams will compete in their research skills through an online competition during the first stage from July 27 to 31. The final rankings will be announced on August 5. Through prior team recruitment, 134 teams and 566 participants will take part in this competition. The scale of participation increased by 10.7% compared to the previous year (121 teams), including universities (38 teams), companies (71 teams), individuals (23 teams), and research institutes (2 teams).

The Ministry of Science and ICT will select the top 20 teams and provide each team with 200 million KRW (totaling 4 billion KRW) in follow-up research funds to prepare for the second stage of the competition. This year, the competition will be conducted online using the cloud, and learning data will be provided through AI Hub (www.aihub.or.kr), enhancing convenience for participating teams.

The second stage of the competition will be held at the end of November this year. Approximately 12 billion KRW in follow-up research funds will be provided to 19 teams.

The Ministry of Science and ICT emphasized, "Through this competition, AI technology will establish itself as a warm technology that improves the quality of life for the people, and it will be an opportunity for AI researchers to grow further through healthy competition, thereby revitalizing the research ecosystem."
