The Skyway to Europe Opens Wider... Korea-EU Horizontal Aviation Agreement Signed
[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The air routes to Europe are expected to expand further.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 25th (local time) that they signed the 'Korea-European Union (EU) Horizontal Air Transport Agreement' in Brussels, Belgium.
The signing ceremony was attended by Yoon Soon-gu, Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, who signed on behalf of the Korean government. Representing the EU member states, Irena Andra?ic, Ambassador to the EU from Croatia, signed, and Philippe Cornelis, Director of the Aviation Transport Department, signed on behalf of the European Commission.
This agreement will come into effect on the first day of the month following the mutual notification by both Korea and the EU that their domestic approval procedures have been completed. The two sides had initially signed a preliminary agreement in October 2018, but some clauses were revised due to Brexit (the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU). Subsequently, in March, a final consensus on the agreement text was reached, and after completing domestic procedures for signing, the signing ceremony was held this time.
Through this agreement, the aviation safety management obligations of both parties will become clearer, and all airlines from EU member states that have aviation agreements with Korea will be able to operate routes to and from Korea. This is expected to strengthen aviation safety and diversify airline choices for citizens on both sides.

A government official stated, "Based on the conclusion of this horizontal air transport agreement, we will promote discussions on aviation liberalization with the European Union, which has formed a single aviation market, and deepen comprehensive aviation cooperation between the two sides, including expanding technical exchanges in helicopter production and mutual certification of aviation parts." The government also plans to launch the Korea-EU Transport Cooperation Meeting in the second half of this year to discuss cooperation measures across transportation sectors such as aviation and railways.
