Lim Ji-young's Violin... Complete Performance of Bach and Ysaye Sonatas
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Violinist Lim Ji-young (photo), the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Competition winner, will challenge herself to perform the complete violin sonatas and partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach and the complete violin sonatas by Eug?ne Ysa?e this coming July.
The total number of pieces to be performed is 12. Lim Ji-young plans to divide the performance into two days, playing six pieces each on July 1 and July 11.
Bach's three unaccompanied violin sonatas and three partitas are works known as the "Old Testament of the Violin." They are considered the essence of Bach's music and are notoriously difficult to perform.
Ysa?e was a legendary Belgian violinist. The Queen Elizabeth Competition rotates annually among four categories: violin, piano, cello, and vocal. The violin category, which Lim Ji-young won, is regarded as the most prestigious. This is because the Queen Elizabeth Competition originated in 1937 as the Ysa?e Violin Competition in memory of Ysa?e. Ysa?e left behind six unaccompanied violin sonatas.
Lim Ji-young debuted at age 14 with the Kumho Young Artist Concert. She studied at the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts, Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, and Korea National University of Arts. She is currently pursuing her master's degree under Professor Michaela Martin at the Kronberg Academy in Germany. The violin she plays is the 1717 Stradivarius "Sasserno."
