'Orpheus·Interstellar...' The Enriched Lotte Concert Hall Organ Odyssey
Performances on February 25, July 28, and December 22... View the Inside of the Pipe Organ on a Large Screen
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Lotte Concert Hall will present an even richer 'Organ Odyssey' stage this year, based on Greek mythology, movies, and fairy tales.
'Organ Odyssey' is a performance that allows audiences to get closer to the pipe organ, which is a symbol of Lotte Concert Hall, and is the most popular program among the L Concert series presented by Lotte Concert Hall.
This year, 'Organ Odyssey' will be performed three times under the titles 'Organ Orpheus' on February 25, 'Organ Interstellar' on July 28, and 'Christmas Organ' on December 22.
On February 25, 'Organ Orpheus' will feature organist Junho Park and violinist Jiyoon Kim, who runs the YouTube channel 'Kim Jiyoon's Life Stage.' 'Organ Orpheus' is based on the story of Orpheus from Greek mythology. It musically depicts the story of Orpheus descending to the underworld to bring back his beloved wife Eurydice to the living world. Junho Park and Jiyoon Kim will present a rich ensemble through the combination of organ and violin.
On July 28, 'Organ Interstellar' is a performance that rearranges familiar pieces for the public through the combination of organ and piano. The title of the performance is taken from the 2014 film 'Interstellar,' which showcased an impressive combination of organ and piano.
The organ has the characteristic of being able to sustain sound infinitely as long as the keys are pressed and air is continuously supplied. The reason the organ carries religious connotations and a sacred image is not only due to its long history of use in churches but also because of this sound sustainability. Unlike the organ, the piano, although also a keyboard instrument, has completely different characteristics, allowing dynamic keystrokes and versatile sound transitions. In the Organ Interstellar performance, the combination of organ and piano, which have these contrasting features, creates an acoustically complementary and rich ensemble.
On December 22, 'Christmas Organ' will harmoniously weave various Christmas stories contained in fairy tales with organ performances. A diverse repertoire well-suited to the Christmas atmosphere will be prepared.

The 'Organ Odyssey' series at Lotte Concert Hall not only allows audiences to listen to pipe organ performances but also to understand the history and structure of the instrument through commentary, and even observe the inside of the instrument in detail. A concert guide enters inside the pipe organ and shows the interior to the audience via a dual live broadcast on a large screen. Through the performer's explanations and the large screen installed at the front of the stage, audiences can more easily understand the characteristics of the pipe organ, which is a keyboard instrument with wind instrument features, including the stops that determine various tones, the role and actual movement of the wind chest supplying air to the pipes, the function and operation of the swell box that controls the volume, the length of the longest pipe and the characteristics of the sound it produces, and the tonal differences between metal pipes and wooden pipes.
