The Chevrolet pickup truck Colorado sold out its initial batch of about 400 units within a day of its launch in the domestic market last July. The response from Korean consumers to the "authentic American pickup" was enthusiastic. The domestic pickup truck market is around 20,000 units per year. Although this is a small market compared to sedans or SUVs, there is a steady demand from enthusiasts. While there is clear demand from Korean consumers for pickup trucks, there have not been many new models to meet this need.
The Colorado is Chevrolet's third-generation fully redesigned model, introduced to the Korean market after five years. Compared to the previous generation, it emphasizes a tougher exterior and has been upgraded with a more luxurious interior. I test-drove the third-generation Colorado, which boasts both on- and off-road driving capabilities, around Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, on the 10th of last month.
Upon first seeing the new Colorado, the more pronounced muscular character lines and the sharp-looking headlamps stood out compared to the previous generation. From the side, the wheelbase (distance between the front and rear axles) has been lengthened, but the front overhang (distance from the front wheel centerline to the bumper) has been shortened, giving it a sporty feel.
The interior design has changed dramatically. An 11-inch large cluster and an expansive 11.3-inch touchscreen give the impression of a high-tech vehicle. The round-shaped air conditioning vents and the red accent stitching throughout the cabin emphasize a youthful and dynamic vibe. However, there is no built-in navigation system. It is a bit disappointing that you have to use Apple CarPlay or Google Android Auto for navigation.
I drove the new Colorado on a mountain road. Although I was concerned about driving a large vehicle on a narrow mountain path, the high ride height provided a wide field of view, making it easy to drive. Blind spots that were hard to see were checked using the surround vision camera, which shows the front, rear, and sides from various angles. In addition, the new Colorado is equipped with an underbody camera that displays the underside of the vehicle on the central screen. By touching the underbody camera icon on the central screen, you can see the real-time condition of the road under the car. If dirt gets on the camera lens, simply click the cleaning icon on the touchscreen and the car will automatically clean the camera lens.
Throughout the winding mountain road, the Colorado seemed to maintain its composure. Even when climbing over large rocks that required more power, it moved quietly and nimbly without revving the engine RPMs significantly. The new Colorado is equipped with a 2.7L gasoline turbo engine that delivers a maximum output of 314 horsepower and a maximum torque of 54 kg·m.
I also tried sitting in the back seat. The seatback is set at a nearly right angle, so it's not as comfortable as a family car, but it was adequate. Instead, various specialized options showcase the vehicle's identity. The cargo bed capacity is 1,186 liters, an increase of 16 liters compared to the previous generation. Folding down the rear seats reveals space for storing long tools or luggage. In addition, features such as the rear bumper corner step for easy access to the truck bed, a cargo lamp for illuminating the bed during nighttime work, and 200V/400W power outlets are all standard. Trailering technology for towing heavy loads such as campers or yachts has also been enhanced. The Colorado offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,492 kg.
The only drawback is the increased price that comes with improved features. The new Colorado starts at 72.79 million won. This is about 30 million won higher than the previous generation. A Chevrolet representative explained that the price increase is due to the addition of many new technologies not seen in the previous generation, as well as a significant rise in exchange rates over the past five years.
