Mini Embraces the Family, Reliable Even on Winding Mountain Roads

The Mini's compact sport utility vehicle (SUV), Countryman, has been launched in Korea as a fully redesigned new model after seven years. The vehicle has grown in size both inside and out, and the interior has been meticulously arranged, giving the impression that it was developed with the preferences of Korean consumers in mind.

When the first-generation model was unveiled in 2011, some critics argued that its exterior did not feel "Mini-like," raising concerns about the brand's identity. However, after two generations, it has secured a solid fan base. It has been recognized for its suitability as a family car and its versatility for both city and outdoor activities. The headquarters also believes that Korean customers are more loyal compared to other markets.

Interior and Exterior Design: Not Quite "Mini"?

Compared to the previous second-generation model, both the exterior and interior have become noticeably larger. The Mini CountrymanA compact SUV produced by Mini. was already considered the largest vehicle in the brand's lineup, but it has grown even more this time. The length has increased by 150mm, the width by 25mm, and the height by 105mm. The wheelbase, which determines interior space, has also grown by 20mm. In terms of interior space alone, this is the largest among all Mini-branded vehicles to date.

The front seat shoulder and elbow room have also become more generous. Considering that the Mini brand emphasizes a "go-kart" driving feel, the larger size seems to deviate slightly from the brand's original direction. While Mini is clearly a premium "compact" brand and the Countryman is classified as a compact SUV, its exterior and interior dimensions are on par with, or even exceed, those of typical midsize SUVs.

The rear seats can be adjusted forward and backward, as well as reclined, to maximize trunk space. Even without compromising the front seating area, adults can sit comfortably in the back. The trunk offers a base capacity of 505 liters, expandable up to 1,530 liters. The signature angular headlights and rear lamps inspired by the British Union Jack flag are design elements carried over from previous Mini models. The octagonal grille, outlined with thin lines, gives a sharp impression.

The most eye-catching feature inside is undoubtedly the large circular OLED display. With a diameter of 240mm, this is the first time such a display has been used in the automotive industry. The screen is clear, highly responsive, and the overall interface is intuitive, making it easy to use. While the circular shape may feel unfamiliar at first for those used to rectangular displays, it quickly becomes natural.

This is also the aspect the company emphasized most when introducing the new model. While previous Mini center displays were also circular, the bezel has been made much thinner and the display itself is positioned as if it's a separate unit, giving it a modern feel. The driver's instrument cluster has been boldly removed, with all key information now available via the central circular display and a head-up display. Most functions, including climate control, can also be managed through the center display.

The standard navigation system uses Tmap. Mini and BMW have previously used Tmap's map data for vehicles released in Korea, but this time, the Tmap interface has been fully adapted for the circular display. With the latest "Operation System 9," users can access in-car games and video streaming.

It is also possible to download and install third-party applications. The feature that allows a smartphone to be used as a car key is also very practical. There are eight different modes to choose from, depending on your preference. The screen graphics, projection-style ambient lighting on the passenger side dashboard, and driving/function sounds all change according to the selected mode. Features that personalize the car are found throughout. The character-based interface is also visually appealing.

Aiming to be a family car, the driving feel seems to have been set to be more stable compared to the previous second-generation model. However, this is only relative to the smaller three-door model within the same brand; compared to other compact SUVs, it still offers agile and lively driving. Its true value shines on gently curving mountain roads rather than straight highways. The steering is precise and responsive, and the turbo lag is barely noticeable, making its driving performance highly commendable.

The test-driven model was the basic Classic trim, equipped with a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine and a seven-speed Steptronic Sport dual-clutch transmission, delivering 204 horsepower and 30.6 kg·m of torque. The next-level Favored trim has the same specs. The high-performance John Cooper Works trim offers 317 horsepower and 40.8 kg·m of torque.

All trims released in Korea come standard with the ALL4 all-wheel drive system. Among the Mini models available in Korea, only the Countryman features all-wheel drive. The base model also includes driving assistance features such as collision and rear-end warning, lane departure warning, and parking assistance features like panoramic view. The Favored trim adds active cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, while the John Cooper Works trim includes more advanced features such as side collision warning and lane change assist. Prices are 49.9 million won for the Classic trim, 57 million won for the Favored trim, and 67 million won for the John Cooper Works trim (all including VAT).
