Samsung C&T Signs 'High-Voltage Alternating Current Transmission' Agreement with Hitachi Energy, Targeting the European Power Grid
Expanding the Scope of Collaboration
Building Integrated Power Grid Solutions
Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction Group announced on April 14 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hitachi Energy at the company's headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, for collaboration in the European power grid business, specifically in the high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) sector.
This agreement expands the partnership between the two companies from high-voltage direct current (HVDC), which was established in October 2024, to include the alternating current transmission sector. The signing ceremony was attended by Secheol Oh, President and CEO of Samsung C&T Corporation, and Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy. Based on this agreement, the two companies have established a collaborative framework targeting the European power grid market.

The HVDC technology led by the company is advantageous for long-distance, high-capacity transmission and is used for submarine cables or interconnecting national power grids. The HVAC technology, which is the focus of this collaboration, is essential for the stable operation of existing power grids. By utilizing both direct current and alternating current technologies, it is possible to enhance and stabilize power grids.
Recently, power demand in Europe has surged due to the increase in electric vehicles, industrial facilities, and data centers. In response, modernization of the power infrastructure is underway. The role of alternating current technology has become increasingly important for efficient transmission and distribution and for cross-border power exchange.
Moving forward, the two companies plan to develop joint strategies for power grid projects in Europe and identify new opportunities. They are currently collaborating on large-scale global energy projects, such as the offshore facility power supply project for Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the United Arab Emirates and the Marinus Link submarine power project in Australia.
