Behind-the-Scenes Stories of Hwangnyongsa Excavation Over Tea... Gyeongju Heritage Institute to Host "Daedam Silla"
Researchers to Discuss Silla’s Parcel Delivery and Rise and Fall
First Session on March 26; Registration Opens March 16
The National Gyeongju Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage announced on March 13 that it will host “Daedam Silla” four times this year, sharing behind-the-scenes stories from excavation sites with the public.
Launched in 2018, this program features staff members directly involved in field investigations and research who meet citizens at a cafe in the evening to have tea and discuss Silla cultural heritage.
This year, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hwangnyongsa Temple Site excavation, the program will delve into four specific topics. Starting with “The Splendid Rise and Fall of Hwangnyongsa Temple” by researcher Choi Joonsik on March 26, the series will continue with “Silla’s Parcel Delivery Service 1,300 Years Ago” by researcher Kim Solbeom on May 28, “Excavation Stories We Didn’t Know” by researcher Eom Sunghyun on August 27, and “Stories of Artifact Conservation” by researcher Jeong Gyudeok on November 26. The program will cover a wide range of topics, from the founding of Hwangnyongsa Temple, which was a center of East Asian Buddhism, to the scientific conservation of excavated artifacts.

The first session will be held at the Cafe Du Foret Gyeongju branch near Oryeong in Gyeongju. Citizens wishing to participate can apply by calling the institute from 9 a.m. on March 16 to 6 p.m. on March 20. The number of participants is limited to 30.
