Gangwon Province Ramps Up Efforts to Attract 'National Hub Fishing Port' Following Success of 'Fishing Village New Deal'
Accelerating the Advancement of Fishing Ports on the Foundation of Stable Fishing Village New Deal Projects
Securing KRW 33.2 Billion for Sacheonjin Port in Gangneung and KRW 92.2 Billion for Daepo Port in Sokcho
Based on its experience in being selected for and successfully implementing projects such as the 'Fishing Village New Deal Project,' Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is now moving forward in earnest to attract the 'National Hub Fishing Port Development Project' led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
This project, a large-scale national initiative, will select only 12 locations across the country. The province has applied for two sites—Sacheonjin Port in Gangneung and Daepo Port in Sokcho—staking everything on its innovative plans, which total KRW 125.4 billion. The province plans to submit its final application to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on May 28.
The Sacheonjin Port project in Gangneung aims to restore the diminishing functions of the fishing port and establish 'Sacheonjin Port as a Small but Strong Hub Port' by expanding distribution infrastructure and promoting marine tourism. The main projects, with a total investment of KRW 33.2 billion, include: ▲ an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered automated parking lot ▲ installation of the Sea-Link Pedestrian Bridge ▲ improvement of seafood processing work environments ▲ modernization of eco-friendly low-temperature fish auction facilities ▲ a Food Complex Center ▲ and a Marine Leisure Learning Center.
Daepo Port in Sokcho is set to transform into a 'destination-based marine tourism consumption hub' that encourages visitors to stay longer, through innovations in seafood logistics and the creation of new landmarks.
The major projects, with a total investment of KRW 92.2 billion, include: ▲ the Wave Walk ▲ development of the Daepo Port Sea Market (fresh fish market) street ▲ establishment of the Daepo Port Cold Chain Hub (ice-making and freezing facilities) ▲ a Fisheries Product Distribution Center (FPC) at the production site ▲ and a Smart Public Parking Lot at Oeongchi Port.
The province is concentrating its administrative resources to prepare for the written review and on-site inspection by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, which will follow immediately after the application is submitted at the end of May. In particular, with only 12 locations available nationwide, the province aims to logically demonstrate the project’s feasibility and earnestly convey the strong desire of local residents to secure the project.
