From Do Ho Suh's Large-Scale Installation to Soo Geun Park's "Ear": K-Auction's May Auction
A Total of 83 Works, Valued at Approximately 10.4 Billion Won
Auction to Be Held on May 27 at Sinsa-dong Headquarters
"Bidding for 'Ear' by Soo Geun Park Starts at 850 Million Won"
Soo Geun Park's 1964 work "Ear" will return to the market for the first time in about 12 years since the "Soo Geun Park 100th Anniversary Exhibition" held in 2014. K-Auction announced on May 15 that it will hold its May auction featuring a total of 83 pieces, with an estimated total value of approximately 10.4 billion won, at its headquarters in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, at 4:00 p.m. on May 27.
This auction features not only Soo Geun Park's "Ear," but also works from the masters of modern and contemporary Korean art such as Whanki Kim, Youngkuk Yoo, Jungseop Lee, and Ungno Lee, as well as major contemporary artists including Nam June Paik, Do Ho Suh, Hyungkeun Yoon, Seobo Park, and Woohwan Lee. Works by contemporary artists such as Ayako Rokkaku, Egami Etsu, Anna Park, and Angel Otero will also be auctioned.
The most notable piece is Soo Geun Park's "Ear." This oil painting on masonite is among Park's later works, depicting figures on their way home on a granite-like textured surface, a signature of the artist. It was featured as a representative work alongside "Laundry Place" in the 2014 "Soo Geun Park 100th Anniversary Exhibition," and is now being offered at auction for the first time. The estimated price is available upon request, and bidding will start at 850 million won.
Whanki Kim's 1969 work "Untitled" is also up for auction. This oil painting on cotton, measuring 120×85 cm, has an estimated price of 780 million to 1.5 billion won. Painted during his New York period, the piece features a cross composition in shades of blue, red and ochre color fields, and dots arrayed horizontally. The work showcases Kim's formal experimentation before his iconic "dot paintings."
Youngkuk Yoo's 1988 work "Mountain" will be auctioned with an estimated price of 400 million to 800 million won. The piece depicts a mountain by layering orange, purple, and teal color fields over a red background. Other notable works include Jungseop Lee's silver foil piece "Artist Drawing Family" (estimated at 40 million to 120 million won), Ungno Lee's "The Crowd" (30 million to 100 million won), and Wookkyung Choi's "River That Does Not Flow" (22 million to 70 million won).
Among Korean contemporary art, Do Ho Suh's large-scale installation "Cause & Effect" stands out. Measuring 164 cm in diameter and 300 cm in height, the work is constructed from acrylic, aluminum discs, stainless steel frame, and cables. Thousands of small figures are interconnected to form a single structure. The estimated price is 280 million to 600 million won.
Nam June Paik's "The Tiger is Alive" and his 1997 "Untitled" are also included in the auction. "The Tiger is Alive" is estimated at 39 million to 80 million won, while "Untitled" is expected to fetch 400 million to 600 million won.
