On May 14, Daejeon mayoral candidates Jangwoo Lee, Taejeong Heo, and Heerin Kang visited the Daejeon Metropolitan Election Commission to officially register as candidates for the 9th nationwide local elections, officially launching their election campaigns.
Jangwoo Lee, the People Power Party candidate, stated, "This election will be a contest between the competent and the incompetent. It will be a showdown between those with a grand vision for Daejeon's development and those without, and ultimately, a de facto judgment on Taejeong Heo, the Democratic Party candidate, who repeatedly made policy missteps during the 7th popularly elected administration."
Taejeong Heo, the Democratic Party candidate, outlined his three core campaign goals: restoring people's livelihoods, citizen sovereignty, and settling the legacy of past internal conflicts. He said, "Many citizens have expressed their empathy and strong support."
He went on to emphasize, "Through an overwhelming victory, I will put an end to unilateral and uncommunicative governance and make Daejeon a city where citizens are truly in charge."
Heerin Kang, the Reform New Party candidate, said, "When I meet citizens in Daejeon, they often express disappointment with established politics. I decided to run not to present the lesser of two evils, but to offer the very best choice."

He continued, "Amid political conflict, with the People Power Party failing to overcome the legacy of internal strife and martial law, and the Democratic Party heading down the path of authoritarianism, both parties' mayoral candidates are only proposing shortsighted cash handout policies.
