The newly unveiled exhibit is a Boeing 747-400 (HL7489) model donated by Korean Air. With a fuselage height of 19.4 meters, this aircraft flew around the world a total of 13,842 times, logging 86,095 flight hours over a span of 20 years from 1994 to 2014 before being retired. This aircraft played a pivotal role in Korean Air's growth into a global airline.
During his commemorative speech, Won-tae Cho, Chairman of Hanjin Group, said, "For more than 50 years, Los Angeles has been like a second home to Korean Air," and added, "The Korean Air Aviation Exhibition Hall aims to inspire young people to become the pilots, engineers, and innovators of the future by showcasing the science and imagination behind flight."
Jeffrey Rudolph, CEO of the California Science Center, responded by saying, "We deeply appreciate Korean Air's support and collaboration in creating a world-class science learning experience," and emphasized, "We are building a special educational facility that will stimulate the curiosity of not only children and youth in the Los Angeles community but also future scientists from around the world."
The exhibition hall utilizes the entire aircraft, including the first and second floors of the cabin, the cargo hold, and landing gear, as an interactive space for all age groups to enjoy. Visitors can learn about aviation through a variety of programs, such as interactive cockpit displays, virtual flight experiences, and explanations of aircraft operation principles. There is also a section introducing various airline professions, including flight operations, cabin crew, and maintenance.
