Assemblyman Chu, after being selected as a preliminary candidate along with Assemblyman Yoo Young-ha, competed in the main primary and was ultimately chosen as the final candidate.
Chairman Park explained, "The result reflects both the votes from the electoral college and the public opinion poll conducted over two days, April 24 and 25," adding, "After converting the results of the electoral college vote and public opinion poll into valid votes, we added them together, translated the sum into a percentage based on a 100% scale, and then applied candidate-specific point adjustments to finalize the selection."
The People Power Party has experienced internal turmoil and controversy over nominations during the process of selecting the final candidate for Daegu Mayor. Vice Speaker of the National Assembly Joo Ho-young and former Broadcasting and Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jin-sook considered running as independents in protest of the nomination committee's decision to exclude them, leading to concerns and internal conflict within the party. During this period, the Democratic Party nominated former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum as its candidate for Daegu Mayor, intensifying the sense of crisis within the traditionally conservative Daegu region.
However, the situation improved after Vice Speaker Joo announced he would not run on April 23, followed by former Chairperson Lee's similar announcement the next day. With the selection of the final Daegu Mayor candidate on this day, internal discord within the People Power Party has subsided. Candidate Chu will now face former Prime Minister Kim in a bid to defend the conservative stronghold. Assemblyman Chu is scheduled to hold a press conference at the party's Daegu branch at 1 p.m. this afternoon.
