Profitable Spring at Seongryugul... Uljin's 'Flowercation' Attracts Crowds
A Three-Step Route Connecting the Flower Market, Experiences, and Local Businesses
Transforming Cherry Blossom Tourism into Local Consumption
Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province has demonstrated new possibilities for local tourism by leveraging spring flowers as an experiential tourism content. The 'Yeouljin Flowercation' Flower Market, held near Seongryugul Cave during peak cherry blossom season, concluded successfully with strong support from both tourists and local residents. Rather than remaining a simple seasonal event, the program was highly regarded for effectively promoting extended stays by organically connecting local businesses with tourist attractions.

On April 11 and 12, Uljin County hosted the 'Yeouljin Flowercation' Flower Market at the entrance of Seongryugul Cave, presenting a spring tourism program that combined cherry blossoms, a flower market, performances, and hands-on experiences. This event was the first project designed to expand Uljin’s year-round tourism resources into emotional content, and it was notable for reinterpreting the tourist attraction as a complex space where consumption and experience come together.
Ten local businesses participated in the event, offering a variety of flowers and potted plants, while experiential programs using flowers were also operated at the venue. The response from visitors exceeded expectations: some experiences closed early due to full bookings, and most flower products sold out, confirming the potential of experiential consumer content centered around spring flowers.
The event also featured busking performances amid the falling cherry blossoms. Visitors to Seongryugul Cave enjoyed both the performances and the flower market, experiencing an emotional connection that went beyond traditional tourism. By adding cultural content to the natural scenery, the event succeeded in increasing visitors’ length of stay and their overall satisfaction with the destination.
In particular, the 'Three Missions Event' organized by Uljin County served as a symbolic highlight of the festival’s achievements. Visitors who completed all three activities—touring Seongryugul Cave, shopping at the Seongryugul commercial district, and either purchasing flowers or participating in experiences at the flower market—were given souvenirs. This naturally guided tourist traffic toward local businesses, creating a virtuous cycle in which visits to tourist attractions led to purchases in nearby stores and further enjoyment through event participation.
Unique promotional activities also attracted attention throughout the venue. Staff from the Uljin County Department of Culture and Tourism dressed as bees, taking photos with children and energizing the atmosphere, which proved especially popular with families. This approach added a lively and friendly touch to the event, making the spring scenery of Seongryugul even more enjoyable for all visitors.
Local businesses that participated in the event also expressed high satisfaction. The combination of hands-on activities and sales created a vibrant atmosphere, resulting in tangible sales and promotional effects rather than just a display event. This structure, where local residents played leading roles and tourists became the main agents of consumption and experience, is seen as a model for the direction that regional tourism content should pursue.
An official from Uljin County stated, "We planned this event to widely promote the beauty of Seongryugul in full bloom and to create an event where local merchants and the community could thrive together. We will continue to develop differentiated tourism content that visitors can participate in and enjoy firsthand."

This 'Flowercation' shows that tourism should not be limited to simply appreciating scenery. When visitors go beyond merely viewing flowers to engaging in experiences and consumption, forming connections with the local area, regional tourism becomes truly competitive. What Uljin nurtured beneath the cherry blossoms was not just flowers, but new possibilities for regional tourism.
