On April 17, Assemblymen Choo Kyung-ho and Yoo Young-ha passed the preliminary primary for the People Power Party’s Daegu mayoral candidacy and will now compete against each other in the main primary.
Park Deok-heum, head of the People Power Party’s Nomination Management Committee, held a briefing at the party headquarters that afternoon and announced, “As a result of the internal preliminary primary for Daegu mayor, Assemblymen Choo and Yoo have advanced to the main primary.” Choo, a three-term lawmaker, is a career bureaucrat who previously served as Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Economy and Finance. Yoo, a first-term lawmaker, is a former lawyer known as the spokesperson for former President Park Geun-hye.
Previously, the People Power Party held a preliminary primary with six candidates, including Assemblymen Choo and Yoo, Assemblyman Yoon Jae-ok (fourth-term), Assemblyman Choi Eun-seok (first-term), former Assemblyman Hong Seok-jun, and former Daegu Dong District Mayor Lee Jae-man, after cutting off (excluding from nomination) applicants such as National Assembly Deputy Speaker Joo Ho-young and former Korea Communications Commission Chairwoman Lee Jin-sook among a total of nine applicants.
The main primary for the Daegu mayoral candidacy will include a debate on the 19th, voting on the 24th and 25th, and the final candidate is scheduled to be announced on the 26th.

Meanwhile, in the preliminary primary for the Chungbuk governor candidacy, former Daegu High Prosecutors’ Office Chief Yoon Gap-geun advanced to the main primary and will compete against the incumbent governor, Kim Young-hwan. The Chungbuk governor primary will be conducted with a debate on the 20th, voting on the 25th and 26th, and the final candidate will be confirmed on the 27th.
