Old Techniques Reborn with Contemporary Sensibility
National Intangible Heritage Center Showcases Achievements of Traditional Craft Training
Exhibition at Seoul KCDF Gallery from April 17
The National Intangible Heritage Center will hold the exhibition "Breath: From Tradition to the Future" from April 17 to April 26 at Gallery 2F of the Korea Craft & Design Foundation (KCDF) in Seoul.
This event will showcase the achievements of three specialized training programs in intangible heritage crafts that took place last year. Visitors will be able to appreciate a wide range of works created by artisans who participated in the Traditional Craft Reproduction and Restoration Research Course, the Intangible Heritage Creative Workshop Residency, and the Traditional Craft Commercialization Course.
Participants in the Reproduction and Restoration Research Course recreated various artifacts under the theme of "crafts for containing things." Notable works include the reproduction of the National Treasure "Gisagyecheop and its Box," an embroidered cover of the "Geumgwangmyeongchoiseungwanggyeong" Buddhist scripture, and a horse travel pouch, among others.
Residency participants from fields such as woodcraft, knotting, lacquerware, metalcraft, and rush weaving reinterpreted traditional aesthetics with a modern sensibility under the theme of "celebration."
Participants in the commercialization course developed traditional techniques in royal painting, dyeing, knotting, embroidery, and quilting into forms suitable for everyday use.
