The Murder of an 11-Year-Old Shocks Japan: Stepfather Confesses, "I Did It"
Reported Missing by Stepfather on the Day of Disappearance, Credibility of Statement in Question
Lived Together After Remarriage... No Record of Child Abuse Reports
In Kyoto, Japan, the body of an elementary school student who had gone missing on his way to school was found dead in the mountains nearly three weeks after his disappearance. The shock has spread further as the boy's stepfather, who lived with him, was arrested on suspicion of abandoning the body. What was initially believed to be a simple missing child case shifted towards the possibility of a crime as time passed, and the impact has grown after it was revealed that a family member was the suspect.

The stepfather reportedly admitted to the charges during questioning, stating, "I did it."
Previously, Yuki went missing on the morning of March 23 while on his way to school. At that time, the stepfather told police that he had driven Yuki close to the school by car, and it was reported that he himself filed the missing person report. However, Yuki was not seen in any footage from the school or surrounding closed-circuit (CC) TV cameras, and no witnesses came forward, raising doubts about the credibility of the stepfather's statement.
The discovery of personal belongings during the search process further deepened suspicions about the case. Six days after his disappearance, Yuki's bag was found in the mountains about 3 kilometers from the school, in an area that search teams had already checked multiple times. Notably, the bag was not severely damaged despite rainfall, leading to speculation that it had not been left outside for long but was instead moved there at a later time by someone. On the 20th day after his disappearance, a single black sneaker was found about 6 kilometers away. Police then launched a large-scale search centered around the locations where the boy's belongings were found and ultimately discovered Yuki's body in the bushes about 5 kilometers from where the shoe was found. His body was found nearly three weeks after he went missing.
The suspect had reportedly remarried Yuki's mother late last year and had since been living together as a family. However, it is said that there was little interaction with the local community, as neighbors testified that they "were not really aware of his presence." Additionally, there had been no prior reports or consultations related to child abuse, so the motive for the crime remains unclear.

Police are currently focusing their investigation on identifying the specific timing and method of the crime, as well as the route taken to abandon the body. They are also looking into whether the suspect acted alone, whether there were any additional crimes, and if there may have been any accomplices. The authorities stated, "It is difficult to draw conclusions about the case when the cause of death has not been clearly determined," maintaining a cautious stance.
