First, flood detection alarm devices will be installed in all seven underpasses in the city, including Gwangmyeong, Cheolsan, Haan, Soha, Deokan, and Gwangmyeong Interchange (IC).
The flood detection alarm system immediately notifies disaster response personnel and on-site staff when flooding is detected, and emits a powerful warning sound in the area to prevent vehicles from entering and to protect lives.
By integrating the system with the existing laser water level gauges, an even more thorough and accurate response system is expected to be established.
A smart safety system will also be introduced in the semi-underground residential area near Mokgamcheon Stream, which is prone to repeated flooding.
The city plans to install 18 flood detection alarm devices throughout alleyways where rapid evacuation is difficult in the event of river flooding, enabling early alerts for approximately 270 households in the vicinity so that residents can evacuate in time to secure the "golden hour."
In addition, the city will support the installation of backflow prevention valves and flood barriers in 38 vulnerable homes selected through analysis of flood records from the past 10 years and GIS-based flood risk maps, in order to fundamentally prevent flood damage.
The city aims to complete the installation and inspection of all facilities by June, before the official start of the rainy season and heavy downpours, to ensure thorough readiness for the summer monsoon period.
Choi Hyemin, acting mayor (vice mayor) of Gwangmyeong City, stated, "As unpredictable torrential rains become more frequent due to the climate crisis, it is more important than ever to proactively build infrastructure to protect citizens' safety," adding, "We will do our utmost to strengthen the safety response in underpasses and densely populated residential areas so that citizens can live with peace of mind."
