Second Round of Behind-the-Scenes Talks... Trump: "High Likelihood of Agreement with Iran by End of April"
“A Good Trade Deal with the UK, But It Could Change at Any Time”
As the United States and Iran continue behind-the-scenes contacts for a second round of face-to-face negotiations, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that “the likelihood of reaching an agreement with Iran by the end of this month is high.”
According to Sky News UK on April 15 (local time), President Trump was asked in a phone interview with the outlet on the 14th about the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran before King Charles III of the United Kingdom makes a state visit to the United States. He replied, “It’s possible. Very possible. They (Iran) have taken quite a beating.” King Charles III is scheduled to visit Washington, DC and New York from the 27th to the 30th, including attending a White House state dinner and delivering an address to the U.S. Congress.
Earlier on the 14th, President Trump also said in an interview with Fox Business, “I think (the war) is almost over. I believe it’s very close to being finished.” In interviews with the New York Post and ABC, he suggested that armistice talks with Iran could soon resume in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Regarding relations with the United Kingdom, President Trump reiterated his dissatisfaction to Sky News, stating, “I asked them (the UK) for help, but they did not assist.” The UK did not actively participate in the U.S. airstrikes on Iran, declined to deploy troops to the Strait of Hormuz, and only helped with air defense for allied countries in the Middle East.
He described bilateral relations as having “improved but remaining sad,” and added, “I gave them (the UK) a good trade deal. It was a better deal than necessary. That could change at any time.” This suggests he may alter the trade agreement announced by the two countries last year, which focused on reductions in tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
