Government Funding of 29 Billion Won
Designing Large-Capacity, Ultra-Low Temperature Storage Tanks

Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on April 1 that it has been selected for the national R&D project titled "Development of Liquid Hydrogen Storage Tank and Unloading Terminal System Technology," promoted by the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The company will embark on the development of large-capacity liquid hydrogen storage tanks.

This project aims to secure core technologies for the entire cycle—including storage, transfer, and unloading—for the construction of a liquid hydrogen receiving terminal, as well as to connect these technologies to demonstration. As a pioneering initiative to develop flat-bottomed liquid hydrogen storage tank technology for the first time in Korea, it is significant in that it lays the technical foundation for future expansion to large-capacity storage systems of 4,000 cubic meters and 50,000 cubic meters. The government funding for the project is approximately 29 billion won, and the project period is 45 months, from this month until December 2029.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction will collaborate with 14 industry, academic, and research organizations, including Korea Gas Corporation, Korea Gas Technology Corporation, and Korea Gas Safety Corporation, participating in the design, construction, and demonstration operation of the liquid hydrogen storage tanks.

Liquid hydrogen is produced by cooling hydrogen gas to -253 degrees Celsius, and the storage tanks therefore require highly advanced insulation design and construction capabilities to maintain ultra-low temperatures. In addition, to stably increase storage capacity, the flat-bottomed cylindrical structure used for LNG storage will be introduced in Korea for the first time. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to utilize the outcomes of this national project for the construction of liquid hydrogen terminals and the commercialization of storage facilities.

A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official stated, "Although the hydrogen market is growing rapidly both domestically and internationally, the liquid hydrogen technology sector—which is one of the core technologies essential for accelerating the transition to a hydrogen economy—remains in its infancy. Through this national project, the development of the flat-bottomed storage tank will not only contribute to technological self-reliance in the liquid hydrogen sector, which has so far depended heavily on overseas technologies, but is also expected to strengthen competitiveness in hydrogen infrastructure and plant businesses."
