The Shinan Transportation Foundation, established in March last year, is the nation's first public ferry operation agency, and it is about to celebrate its first anniversary on March 21.
Currently, the foundation operates a total of 13 vessels on eight major routes within Shinan County, Jeollanam-do, including eight car ferries, three passenger ferries, and two cargo ships. Additionally, 23 pilot boats and administrative vessels have been deployed on 23 routes connecting smaller islands, forming a dense marine transportation network.
Since its launch, the foundation has provided stable marine transportation services, transporting 445,551 passengers and 145,693 vehicles. In particular, it has increased the number of sailings during holidays and long weekends, and supported local festivals and events to enhance travel convenience for returning residents and tourists.
Last May, the foundation also acquired three passenger ferries from Namsinan Nonghyup on the deficit-ridden Mokpo-Haui·Shini line, establishing a stable operational system. Through this, it generated approximately 250 million won in revenue, achieving significant budget savings.
The county has assessed that public ferry operations have greatly improved mobility rights for island residents. In particular, with 23 pilot boats now connecting even the smallest islands, the expansion of living areas and improvements in residential conditions are bringing notable changes to residents' quality of life.
Paek Jongwon, Chairman of the Shinan Transportation Foundation, stated, "We aim to become a model of public transportation in island regions through transparent management and professionalism. Going forward, we will pursue a fully public ferry system to further enhance the quality of life for island residents."
