Free Screenings Twice Daily at Sokcho Megabox from November 26 to December 2
Unique On-Screen Chemistry Between Cannes Best Actor Roschdy Zem and C?sar Award Nominee Bella Kim
“Winter in Sokcho,” the film that became the talk of the town after selling out every screening at the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival, will be released nationwide on November 26. In Sokcho, the film will also be screened for free twice daily (at 13:20 and 19:30) at Megabox from the opening day until December 2.
Winter in Sokcho is based on the novel of the same name by Swiss author Elisa Shua Dusapin.
The story takes place in a small seaside village in Sokcho, where Suha lives with her mother, who runs a fish shop. While working at a guesthouse, Suha meets Yann, a French writer visiting Korea. Through her interactions with him, she experiences a whirlwind of emotions and gradually comes to understand her own identity. Bella Kim, who plays Suha, and Roschdy Zem, who plays Yann, have received high praise from critics for their harmonious portrayal of delicate and complex inner worlds.
Set against the calm winter landscape of Sokcho, the film weaves together subtle emotions and psychological depth, earning accolades from numerous international media outlets such as “A French film to watch in 2025,” “A marvelously enigmatic work,” and “Effectively conveys the story of two isolated individuals against the cold Sokcho winter.”
Roschdy Zem, who plays Yann, is widely known as a prominent French actor. He solidified his reputation as a skilled performer by winning the Best Actor Award at the 59th Cannes Film Festival for the film “Days of Glory.” He has also been active as a director, with works such as “Bad Faith” and “Chocolat.”
Director Koya Kamura, who helmed Winter in Sokcho, shared that he decided to cast Roschdy Zem after seeing his wordless performance in “Oh Mercy!” In the film, Roschdy Zem perfectly embodies the character of Yann Kerang, a seemingly cold and prickly writer, captivating audiences with his distinctive presence and enigmatic aura.
Bella Kim, who plays Suha, is a successful model who has worked as a brand ambassador for clothing and cosmetics and walked the fashion runway in France. Active in both Korea and France, Bella Kim was chosen by director Koya Kamura, who was seeking an actress fluent in foreign languages to portray a mixed-race character. Winter in Sokcho marks her debut film.
Despite being her first film, Bella Kim demonstrated perfect chemistry with veteran actors such as Roschdy Zem, Park Mihyun, and Ryu Taeho. She was even nominated for Best New Actress at the C?sar Awards, known as the French Oscars. This marks the first time a Korean actress has been nominated for a C?sar Award, and the film review portal Loud And Clear Reviews praised her, stating, “Her future is promising.”
Lee Taehun, Secretary General of the Sokcho Cultural Tourism Foundation, commented, “This film masterfully showcases the flavors, beauty, and sensibilities of Sokcho, and it will serve as an opportunity to widely promote Sokcho’s charm both domestically and internationally. We will continue to expand collaborations with various content creators so that Sokcho can further strengthen its competitiveness as a glocal cultural tourism city.”
