KIOST Holds 52nd Anniversary Founding Ceremony
Unveiling of the Ieodo Anchor and Special Retrospective Exhibition
Reflecting on Half a Century of Marine Science Achievements
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), led by Director Lee Heeseung, held its "52nd Anniversary Founding Ceremony" on October 29 at the main auditorium of its headquarters in Yeongdo-gu, Busan.
The event was attended by Director Lee Heeseung, former heads of the institute, and staff members, who reflected on KIOST's past achievements and reaffirmed their commitment to a new future.
Prior to the ceremony, an unveiling event was held to display the anchor of the research vessel Ieodo, which was retired in November last year. A "KIOST Special Retrospective Exhibition" was also organized, inviting former directors to highlight the institute's 52-year history of progress. Through these events, participants revisited KIOST's legacy and traditions spanning over half a century and shared a vision for the future of marine science.
In addition, awards were presented to external contributors who supported the institute's development, and a "Retirement Ceremony" was held to honor employees reaching retirement age for their dedicated service.

In his commemorative speech, Director Lee Heeseung stated, "KIOST has grown into a world-class research institute thanks to the unwavering dedication and efforts of our predecessors, combined with the continuous challenges undertaken by all members. Moving forward, we will continue to lead the future of Korea as a maritime powerhouse with research outcomes that earn the trust of both the public and the world."
KIOST was established on October 30, 1973, as the Ocean Development Institute affiliated with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. In 2012, it was relaunched as the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, and has since led the advancement of marine science in Korea.
