CU Launches Industry's First "Half-Price Parcel Delivery to Japan" Service...Up to 83% Cheaper
Targeting Demand for Reverse Direct Purchases to Japan
Same Process as Regular Convenience Store Delivery, Up to 3 Days for Shipping
Discount Promotion for Packages up to 500g Until End of November
BGF Retail announced on October 29 that its convenience store chain CU will launch the industry's first "Half-Price Parcel Delivery to Japan" service, available at the lowest price in Korea starting from November 3.
The shipping fees are set at 14,000 won for packages up to 500g, 17,700 won for up to 2kg, 25,500 won for up to 5kg, 37,700 won for up to 10kg, and 66,600 won for up to 20kg. This is up to approximately 83% cheaper than comparable international delivery services (based on the 2kg rate).
The company aims to attract the steadily increasing demand for reverse direct purchases to Japan by leveraging its price competitiveness through collaboration with a domestic logistics startup.
According to the Korea Customs Service, the number of reverse direct purchase shipments from January to August this year reached an all-time high of approximately 61 million. With the rising popularity of K-beauty and fashion, about 33.7 million of these shipments, accounting for 55%, were sent to Japan.
This service can be accessed at CU stores using the same parcel equipment as regular deliveries. If there are no customs clearance issues, the delivery period is expected to take up to three days, excluding the day of acceptance, making it comparable to domestic delivery times.
CU anticipates that the Half-Price Parcel Delivery to Japan service will be widely used by small business owners such as those operating open markets or personal stores in Korea, families or acquaintances of students studying in Japan, and tourists who shop in Korea and send goods to Japan.
To celebrate the launch, CU will hold a promotional event until the end of next month. During this period, packages up to 500g can be shipped for 9,900 won, which is about 4,000 won less than the regular price.
