View original imageThis exhibition is presented as part of the 'Photo Discovery Project,' which utilizes unused spaces in the Seoul Museum of Photography, which opened last May. By making use of areas such as the museum’s stairs and lobby, the exhibition experiments with new forms that are difficult to showcase in a traditional white cube space. The goal is to newly discover the context of the space and works, as well as the format of the exhibition, thereby providing visitors with a multi-layered and sensory exhibition experience.
The exhibition reconfigures the works of participating artists from the opening special exhibition 'Storage Story'-Jung Jihyun, Park Sangmin, Jung Melmel, and Oh Jooyoung-to suit the unique characteristics of the lobby, the starting point of the museum. 'Cast Capture_VR' by Jung Jihyun and Park Sangmin is relocated to the lobby, guiding visitors to experience the exhibition within an architectural context. Jung Melmel’s 'Storage Without Walls' features large photographic works installed on a 10-meter-high wall, and brings collection materials depicted in the photos into the actual space. Through this, the exhibition explores how the act of 'preservation' can be transformed into 'sharing' and 'recontextualization.'
The movement of works, the shift in viewing methods, and the reconsideration of the concept of preservation are the main features of this exhibition. By transforming the exhibition space, structure, and the format of appreciation, the exhibition reexamines the meaning of the museum’s core facility-the storage-and its associated functions of collection and preservation.
Choi Eunju, Director of the Seoul Museum of Art, stated, "The Seoul Museum of Photography opened on May 29 and successfully held its opening special exhibition. Moving forward, we plan to continuously present creative and experimental exhibitions centered on photography." She added, "The Photo Discovery Project is one of the museum’s unique exhibition formats that explores the space from a new perspective and presents creative and experimental possibilities that are difficult to discover in conventional exhibition formats."
