Wearing a black suit and a purple tie, President Trump waved in greeting as he disembarked from Air Force One.
On the Chinese side, Vice President Han Zheng, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng, and Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu were at the airport to welcome President Trump. Children holding bouquets were also waiting.
President Trump accepted the bouquet with a bright smile and had a brief conversation with Vice President Han and others.
When more than 300 young people waved U.S. and Chinese flags and shouted, "Welcome, welcome," President Trump responded by raising his fist. He then boarded a prepared vehicle and proceeded to his accommodation.
During his stay in China, President Trump is scheduled to stay at the Four Seasons Hotel near the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. From 6 p.m., two hours before President Trump’s arrival, crowds of Chinese citizens and international journalists had already gathered around the hotel.
On the second day of his visit, the 14th, President Trump will hold a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in the morning. The two leaders are meeting face-to-face for the first time in about six months, since their last encounter in Busan during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in October last year.
During this summit, a broad range of key issues are expected to be discussed, including tariffs, trade issues, the Taiwan and Iran situations. There is also interest in whether North Korea's nuclear issue and the Korean Peninsula will be addressed.
After the summit, President Trump and President Xi are scheduled to tour Beijing's Temple of Heaven together and later attend a state banquet at the Great Hall of the People in the evening.
On the final day of the visit, the 15th, the two leaders will continue their discussions over tea and lunch at Zhongnanhai, which serves as both the office and residence of President Xi. Afterward, President Trump will conclude his three-day visit and return home.
