Busan National University Women's Research Institute to Hold Public Lectures on "Gender and Ecology"
Highlighting Gender and Ecological Inequality in the Era of Climate Crisis
The Women's Research Institute at Busan National University (President: Choi Jaewon) will hold a series of four public lectures under the theme "Gender and Ecology: Exploring the Possibilities of Life" every Monday at 7 p.m. from November 3 to November 24 at the Busan Women's Social Education Center.
This lecture series is organized with support from the PNU Startup-10 program, which funds Busan National University's research facilities, and will be conducted in collaboration with the Busan Women's Social Education Center's "Reading Feminist Classics" program.
The purpose of these public lectures is to shed light on ecological and environmental issues in the era of climate crisis from a feminist perspective. UN Women has analyzed that, in the context of the climate crisis, women face a 1.8 times higher risk of food insecurity compared to men, emphasizing the need for "climate justice" that takes gender inequality into account.
To address this, Busan National University has invited experts from various fields, including philosophy, history, education, and psychology, to explore the unequal impact of the climate crisis on women and practical solutions within the local community. The lectures will cover topics such as the death of nature, ecology, veganism, and animal rights, and will discuss new ecological discourses for the coexistence of humans and non-humans.
The first lecture (November 3) will feature Go Hyekyung, Director of the Feminist Counseling Research Group at the Korean Society of Women Psychologists, who will explore the possibilities of coexistence and recovery through Anna Tsing's "The Mushroom at the End of the World."
The second lecture (November 10) will be given by Ha Yeoju, an instructor from the Cultural Heritage Division at Busan City Hall, who will highlight the relationship between women and nature, as well as the ecological destruction caused by modern science, focusing on Carolyn Merchant's "The Death of Nature."
The third lecture (November 17) will be led by Seok Youngmi, a research fellow at Busan National University, who will discuss care-centered and intersectional ecological feminism through Greta Gaard's "Critical Ecofeminism." The fourth lecture (November 24) will be presented by Lee Anna, Chairperson of the Busan Women's Social Education Center, who will examine the connection between patriarchy and meat-eating culture, and the potential for solidarity between feminism and vegetarianism, through Carol Adams' "The Sexual Politics of Meat."
