Wonju City Designates Five Alley-Type Shopping Streets... A New Leap for Local Commercial Districts

On September 22, Wonju City in Gangwon Province designated five local business districts as alley-type shopping streets and officially launched efforts to revitalize neighborhood commercial areas.
The newly designated alley-type shopping streets are Usan Youth Alley-type Shopping Street, Innovation City District 6 Alley-type Shopping Street, Heungyangcheon Alley-type Shopping Street, Eutteum Alley-type Shopping Street, and Musil Furniture Street Alley-type Shopping Street, encompassing a total of 246 stores.
The criteria for designation require that the area is not a traditional market or a large commercial district but a zone densely populated with small businesses, where at least 20 stores are located within 2,000 square meters and a merchants' association has been established. Designated districts are eligible for various benefits, including registration as Onnuri Gift Certificate affiliates and participation in government and local government public projects.
Through this designation, consumers can enjoy tangible benefits by purchasing goods at discounted prices using Onnuri Gift Certificates, while merchants are expected to see increased sales and secure a stable business foundation.
Meanwhile, prior to the designation, Wonju City continuously conducted on-site inspections and gathered feedback from merchants to help them meet the requirements for designation.
