The Democratic Party of Korea recently received reports that a KakaoTalk open chat room called 'Lee Jae-myung Assassination Squad' is being operated, and announced that it will strengthen security measures for Representative Lee Jae-myung and take safety precautions.

View original imageAccording to political circles on the 5th, the Democratic Party's Public Communication Committee held a daily briefing related to the Democratic Police Station at the National Assembly the day before and said, "We have received multiple reports related to the Lee Jae-myung Assassination Squad." The committee confirmed that "a KakaoTalk open chat room named 'Lee Jae-myung Assassination Squad' is being operated, and through a Naver Band called 'People Power Party Central Committee,' a recruitment post stating 'Let's form a Lee Jae-myung arrest squad. Those who want to participate, please apply. Requirements are martial arts black belt holders and those who are not afraid of death' is posted to recruit participants."
They added, "Politics should not become a place of hatred and violence," and said, "We will continuously monitor these activities and respond strongly." They also stated, "We will officially request the party to strengthen security and take safety measures for the party leader."
Regarding the People Power Party Central Committee's Naver Band, they said, "We demand that the People Power Party promptly verify the facts about illegal and anti-democratic acts and take immediate action."
Earlier, on the 4th, Democratic Party lawmaker Yang Moon-seok revealed related content through his social media (SNS), stating that a post recruiting an arrest squad to illegally kidnap Representative Lee Jae-myung was posted on a Naver Band where People Power Party supporters gather. A screenshot of the post from the People Power Party Central Committee's Naver Band, disclosed by lawmaker Yang, reads, "We are forming a Lee Jae-myung arrest squad. Those who want to participate, please apply." It continues, "Requirements are martial arts black belt holders, those who pride themselves on strong patriotism through anti-communist counterintelligence, agile individuals, 20s and 30s are welcome. Those who are not afraid of death and anyone with a strong anti-communist spirit. Please contact us. We are waiting." The account was created in February 2019 and, as of the 4th, has about 27,000 members.
Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Dong-ah also posted a screenshot of the same content on his SNS on the same day, claiming, "This goes beyond simple threats and shows the intent of organizing a criminal group to inflict injury or harsh acts through a serious arrest." He pointed out, "This is a criminal act of distributing illegal information that can be subject to criminal punishment beyond mere freedom of expression."

Earlier, in January last year, Representative Lee Jae-myung was attacked with a weapon by a man in his 60s while visiting the planned site of the new airport on Gadeokdo Island in Busan. Representative Lee suffered about a 9mm injury to his internal jugular vein and was discharged eight days after surgery.
