LG U+, Deleted 207 Terabytes of Customer Data Stored in Used Phones
207.5TB of personal data deleted in 9 months at U+ Diagnosis Centers
"We will lead the way in ensuring safe used phone transactions"
LG Uplus announced that it has deleted 207.5 terabytes (TB) of customer personal data through its nationwide 'Our Neighborhood Used Phone Diagnosis Centers.' The amount of deleted data is equivalent to approximately 14.8 billion sheets of A4 paper.
Since May of last year, LG Uplus has been operating the 'Our Neighborhood Used Phone Diagnosis Centers' (hereafter U+ Diagnosis Centers) to alleviate customer concerns about personal information leaks during the process of selling used smartphones. The U+ Diagnosis Centers provide a service that deletes data stored on used phones by utilizing solutions from the data deletion service provider, Blanco Technology Group.

Assuming about 15 kilobytes (KB) per sheet of A4 paper, this amounts to roughly 14,853,420,000 sheets. If lined up, this would stretch 1,411 km, which is farther than the distance from Seoul to Tokyo (approximately 1,160 km).
As used phones are traded, there is also an effect of reducing electronic waste. By reusing devices through the U+ Diagnosis Centers, about 137 kg of electronic waste has been reduced. LG Uplus analyzed that this has resulted in a total reduction of 34 tons of carbon dioxide. Encouraged by these achievements, the U+ Diagnosis Centers have expanded from 22 locations at the start of operation in May last year to 100 locations nationwide.
Hyunseung Lee, Executive Director of Subscription/Omni Platform at LG Uplus, said, "We will take the lead in strengthening personal information security in the rapidly growing used phone market and creating an environment where customers can trade with peace of mind." He added, "We plan to continue various activities so that customers can use communication services safely."
