Gyeonggi-do, Nationwide First Full Support for Rental Deposit of Youth Preparing for Independence... Applications Accepted from February 28
Gyeonggi Province will be the first in the nation to fully support the rental deposit for youth preparing for independence.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 5th that it will implement the ‘Youth Preparing for Independence Housing Cost Support Project,’ which provides full support for rental deposits (100% provincial funding) for up to 8 years to youth preparing for independence residing in public rental housing managed by Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH), starting joint applications with GH from the 28th of this month. This is the first such initiative nationwide.
Youth preparing for independence refers to young people who have been under the care of child welfare facilities, group homes (shared living homes), or foster care, and who begin living independently after turning 18. Approximately 260 such youth enter society each year within the province.
Gyeonggi Province explained that the ‘Youth Preparing for Independence Housing Cost Support Project’ was planned to create a stable housing environment for youth preparing for independence who find it difficult to secure a large sum of money initially, and to alleviate their housing insecurity caused by difficult economic conditions such as high inflation, high interest rates, and youth employment challenges.
This year, Gyeonggi Province plans to support a total of 118 households, securing a total budget of 1.23 billion KRW, including 830 million KRW from last year’s first supplementary budget and 400 million KRW from this year’s main budget.
The support targets not only youth leaving child welfare facilities but also those leaving youth shelters and other youth welfare facilities. Priority support will be given to existing tenants, and additional budgets will be secured if necessary.
Those wishing to apply for the Youth Preparing for Independence Housing Cost Support Project must first be selected as tenants of GH public rental housing. Applications for Happy Housing are accepted online through the GH Housing Subscription Center (https://apply.gh.or.kr) during recruitment announcements; applications for purchased rental housing are accepted anytime via in-person visits to the Purchased Rental Housing Supply Center; and applications for jeonse rental housing can be submitted anytime by visiting the local eup/myeon/dong administrative welfare centers.

In addition to this rental deposit support, Gyeonggi Province will implement various policies such as temporary special monthly rent support for youth, housing benefits, and goods support to help youth preparing for independence minimize their personal financial burden and achieve independence.
The temporary special monthly rent support provides up to 200,000 KRW per month for a maximum of 24 months to youth who meet requirements such as having a housing subscription savings account. Applications can be made online (via the Bokjiro website) or by visiting the relevant administrative welfare center. Households renting with an income below 48% of the median income can apply for housing benefits (rental fees) at the administrative welfare center, and those residing in GH jeonse rental housing can receive up to 1 million KRW worth of home appliances and furniture through the household support project.
