TikTok to Invest Over 5 Trillion Won in Thailand Data Center
The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has approved a $3.8 billion (approximately 5.4853 trillion KRW) investment by China's ByteDance in data hosting services for its video platform TikTok, according to foreign media including Bloomberg on the 30th.
BOI explained that TikTok's digital infrastructure investment was made for services set to launch next year. Data hosting is a service that securely stores and manages data.
TikTok has previously succeeded in attracting data centers from global companies such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft (MS).
BOI stated, "TikTok's investment marks a significant advancement in strengthening Thailand's digital and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure," adding, "It brings us closer to our goal of becoming a digital innovation hub in Southeast Asia."

Meanwhile, this investment was announced amid TikTok facing the risk of being banned in the United States. The U.S. Congress passed the so-called 'TikTok Ban Act,' which prohibits TikTok from operating locally unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells its U.S. business rights to an American company.
