Even amid the impeachment crisis of the incumbent president, the ruling People Power Party was found to be leading the opposition Democratic Party within the margin of error. Regarding President Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment trial, the public opinion favoring his removal has slightly decreased.
According to the nationwide index survey (NBS) conducted from the 20th to the 22nd by Embrain Public, K-Stat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research (phone interviews via mobile phones with 1,000 men and women aged 18 and over nationwide, with a sampling error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and a response rate of 22.2%), the People Power Party's approval rating rose by 3 percentage points to 38%. The Democratic Party's approval rating also increased by 3 percentage points, trailing the People Power Party by 2 percentage points at 36%.
Regarding party approval ratings, in the third week of December, the Democratic Party recorded 39%, leading the People Power Party by 13 percentage points, but since then, the gap has narrowed to within the margin of error.
Concerning suitability for the next presidential election, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung ranked first with 28%. Among the ruling party, Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo was second with 14%. Following were Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo (7%), Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (6%), and former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon (6%).
Regarding the nature of the next presidential election, 49% of respondents believe that a regime change is necessary, while 41% think the current administration should be re-elected.
Regarding President Yoon's impeachment, 57% of respondents support accepting the impeachment and removing him from office, while 38% support dismissing the impeachment and allowing him to return to duty. Compared to last week's survey, support for removal decreased by 2 percentage points, while support for reinstatement increased by 2 percentage points.
Regarding President Yoon's response to the impeachment trial, 33% viewed it positively, whereas 59% viewed it negatively. Regarding President Yoon's detention, 57% considered it a proper decision, while 39% thought it was a wrong decision.
