Dong-A University (President Lee Hae-woo) announced on the 21st that Professor Han Seong-ho of the College of Medicine was re-elected as the president of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine.
Professor Han Seong-ho was overwhelmingly supported at the regular council meeting of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine held in Seoul on the 19th, successfully securing re-election as the 36th president following his term as the 35th president. His term will last for two years starting January 2026, making his total remaining tenure three years, including one year from his 35th presidency.
Re-election as president of major medical societies in Korea, such as the Korean Academy of Family Medicine, is extremely rare. This is interpreted as a high recognition of Professor Han’s outstanding leadership and efforts toward the development of the academy and the field of family medicine.
Family medicine is a specialty focused on primary care that aims to provide humane, integrated, and holistic medical services, emphasizing disease prevention, rehabilitation, and health promotion for the public. Founded in 1980, the Korean Academy of Family Medicine is a leading professional medical society in Korea with over 11,000 members and 127 training hospitals.
Professor Han Seong-ho said, “It is a great honor to be entrusted again with the presidency of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine at a time when changes in the medical community, including the academy, are inevitable due to the medical policy crisis. I will work even harder to encourage cooperation and participation from our members.”
He added, “A pilot project for the primary care physician system is scheduled to be implemented this year in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. Now is precisely the time when a primary care system that contributes to public health promotion is essential,” emphasizing, “I will do my best to ensure that the primary care system, including the primary care physician system, takes firm root.” He also revealed plans to promote various programs to strengthen family medicine research and education and enhance members’ rights and interests.
Professor Han, who has been with Dong-A University since 2005, is an authority in geriatrics, obesity, vaccination, and clinical nutrition. He also serves as vice president of the Korean Society of Sports Medicine and president of the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam branch of the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity. Additionally, he has held positions as director of admissions and director of international affairs at Dong-A University.
Recognized for his outstanding research achievements and long-term volunteer work, he has received numerous awards including the Korean Academy of Family Medicine’s ‘Handok Academic Award’ (2015) and ‘Family Medicine of the Year Award’ (2015), Dong-A University Hospital’s ‘Hallim Medical Service Award’ (2016), the Mayor of Busan’s Commendation for Anti-Aging Industry Development (2018), the Busan Medical Association Social Service Award (2018), and the Minister of Health and Welfare’s Commendation (2020).
