Transportation Improvement and Tourism Content Development
Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, held a promotional event at Yeongdeok Station to celebrate the full opening of the Donghae Line railway in 2025 and to use the opportunity to promote the region.
The Donghae Line railway, which opened on the first day of the new year, saw the ITX-Maeum train depart from Gangneung at 5:28 a.m., taking 2 hours and 43 minutes to travel through Yeongdeok to Pohang. The existing section from Gangneung to Samcheok took about 1 hour, while the new section from Samcheok to Yeongdeok ran at a speed of 150 km/h, taking 1 hour and 18 minutes.
With the full opening of the Donghae Line, Yeongdeok-gun expects significant improvements in local transportation, as the ITX-Maeum train will run five times daily and the Nuri train three times daily, connecting to major cities such as Busan and Dongdaegu. This is anticipated to provide a great opportunity for the growth of the local tourism industry.
In particular, among the newly established 166.3 km section from Samcheok to Pohang, five stations are located within Yeongdeok-gun, which is ranked among the top 10 tourist destinations nationwide, enhancing accessibility to the region.
