Guro-gu Urges Designation of Gyeongbu Line Undergrounding Pilot Project
Eom Uisik, Acting Mayor of Guro-gu, Attends Local Government Heads Meeting of Gyeongbu Line Undergrounding Promotion Council on the 11th
Signs Joint Petition for Selection of Gyeongbu Line (Seoul Station~Dangjeong Station) Undergrounding Pilot Project
Guro District attended the meeting of local government heads of the Gyeongbu Line Undergrounding Promotion Council held on the 11th at the Yongsan District Office's main conference room and signed a joint petition urging the inclusion of the Gyeongbu Line (Seoul Station to Dangjeong Station) undergrounding project as a national leading project.
The Gyeongbu Line is a key railway line connecting Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, but it divides the areas along the line east and west, acting as a major obstacle to urban planning for balanced regional development. Therefore, demands for undergrounding the Gyeongbu Line have been continuously raised.
The Promotion Council held the meeting to emphasize the necessity of the Gyeongbu Line undergrounding project to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport ahead of the announcement of the leading project sites scheduled for this month, urging that the project be selected as a leading project.
The meeting was attended by seven local government heads belonging to the Promotion Council, including Acting Mayor Eom Uisik of Guro District (△ Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan District △ Jang Youngmin, Deputy Mayor of Dongjak District △ Choi Hogwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District △ Yoo Seonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon District △ Ha Eunho, Mayor of Gunpo △ Choi Daeho, Mayor of Anyang).
The local government heads discussed the necessity of undergrounding the Gyeongbu Line and future response measures, and signed a joint petition for the Gyeongbu Line undergrounding project. The joint petition will be delivered to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in the future.
Since Guro District includes Guro Station and Sindorim Station within the Gyeongbu Line undergrounding section, if the undergrounding is realized, it is expected to alleviate traffic congestion between Seoul and Gyeonggi regions and contribute to improving the living environment of local residents through economic growth and social vitality from upper-level development.
Acting Mayor Eom Uisik of Guro District said, “Through the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Line, it will maintain its function as a key domestic transportation facility while laying the foundation for an urban development plan for coexistence and development of the areas divided by the Gyeongbu Line. We hope that through the Gyeongbu Line Undergrounding Promotion Council, the railway undergrounding project will be reflected in the leading projects and the comprehensive railway integrated development plan, and that it will be executed promptly.”
Meanwhile, the Gyeongbu Line Undergrounding Promotion Council was launched following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the joint promotion of the Gyeongbu Line (National Railroad Line 1) undergrounding in May 2012. Since then, it has jointly conducted basic planning services such as technical reviews for undergrounding and upper-level development plans, raising the necessity of undergrounding to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
