On the afternoon of the 24th (local time), Shin Won-sik, Director of the National Security Office at the Presidential Office, held a meeting with Jake Sullivan, U.S. National Security Advisor, in Washington DC, USA, to discuss key issues including the South Korea-U.S. relationship, North Korea issues, and regional and global cooperation, the Presidential Office announced on the 26th.
Both sides emphasized that under the strong leadership of President Yoon Suk-yeol and President Biden, the South Korea-U.S. alliance has evolved into a true global comprehensive strategic alliance and is stronger than ever before.
Both parties strongly condemned North Korea's continued illegal transfer of weapons and troop dispatches to support Russia's unlawful invasion war in Ukraine. They also shared the recognition that Russia-North Korea military cooperation violates multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions and threatens security in Europe, the Korean Peninsula, the Indo-Pacific region, and worldwide. Furthermore, they agreed to continue cooperating to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.
Both sides discussed recent reckless gray zone provocations by North Korea, such as hints at constitutional amendments reflecting hostile two-state policy, the destruction of inter-Korean connecting roads and railways, and the release of filth balloons, reaffirming their commitment to maintain a strong South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture against any provocations by North Korea, including in border areas. Advisor Sullivan reiterated that the U.S. defense commitment to South Korea is ironclad.
