On the 10th, the Cheonan city government announced that approximately 310,000 people joined the petition urging the swift implementation of the presidential pledge to establish the National Dental Research Institute in Cheonan.
Won Jongmin, Director of Planning and Economy for the city, held a regular briefing at City Hall on this day and said, "As a result of the petition campaign urging swift implementation, conducted from July to September over three months, a total of 314,136 people?equivalent to 45% of the city's total population?participated both online and offline."
The establishment of the National Dental Research Institute in Cheonan was a regional pledge made by President Yoon Sukyeol during the last presidential election, and the Presidential Transition Committee confirmed and announced it as a balanced regional development pledge in April 2022. President Yoon reaffirmed this pledge at the "15th Public Livelihood Forum with the People" held at Seosan Airfield in February this year.
To support the fulfillment of President Yoon's pledge, Cheonan city has signed a joint agreement with Chungnam Province, Dankook University, Osstem Implant Co., Ltd., and the Chungnam Dental Association to attract the institute, strengthened cooperation with local National Assembly members, and engaged in various activities such as coordinating differing opinions between the National Assembly and central ministries. As a result, in December last year, the amendment to the Health and Medical Technology Promotion Act, which provides the legal basis for the institute's establishment, passed the National Assembly, and 200 million won in national funds was allocated for a feasibility and basic planning study for the institute's establishment.
The human and material infrastructure necessary for the establishment of the Dental Research Institute is also fully prepared.
First, to expedite the establishment of the National Dental Research Institute in Cheonan, the city has purchased a 10,093㎡ site in the R&D cluster near Cheonan-Asan KTX Station and completed preparations to allow immediate construction.
Cheonan is home to university hospitals, outstanding overseas research institutes and personnel, bio companies, and industrial complexes, and produces talent in dental research and development, as well as in the field of stem cell tissue regeneration related to dentistry. In particular, Osstem Implant Co., Ltd., the leading domestic medical device manufacturer, also plans to build a production plant and medical facilities for dental medical devices in Cheonan, worth approximately 370 billion won, which is expected to further support research and development, industrial advancement, and competitiveness in the dental field.
Director Won Jongmin stated, "Cheonan is the optimal location, meeting all requirements such as accessibility to the metropolitan area and balanced national development," adding, "Based on the earnest hopes and wishes of our citizens confirmed through the petition, we will persuade the government to ensure the swift implementation of the presidential pledge to establish the National Dental Research Institute in Cheonan."
