Kindergarten Director Receives Suspended Prison Sentence for Fraudulent Subsidy Claims
Fraudulent Receipt of 38 Million Won Over Seven Occasions from 2016 to 2018
The principal of a private kindergarten received a suspended prison sentence for fraudulently receiving 38 million won in subsidies by submitting false reports on tuition budget to the local education office.
According to the legal community, on the 4th, the Cheonan Branch of the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Jeong Jongryun) sentenced B (64), the principal of A Private Kindergarten in Cheonan, to 8 months in prison with a 2-year suspension, for violating the Subsidy Act and other charges. Additionally, 80 hours of community service were ordered.
B omitted details such as fees for specialized activities and book expenses received from parents in the 'Kindergarten Tuition Collection Status' report submitted to the Cheonan Office of Education in February 2016, fraudulently receiving 3 million won in subsidies. From then until May 2018, B illegally obtained a total of about 38 million won in subsidies over seven occasions.
The court stated, "The defendant fraudulently received subsidies by making it appear that the parents' financial burden was lower. Considering the method and amount of the fraud, the crime cannot be considered minor," adding, "However, the fact that all the fraudulently obtained subsidies have been returned and that the defendant has no prior criminal record as a first-time offender were taken into account as favorable circumstances in sentencing."
