Incheon 'Local Publishing Promotion Ordinance' Passed by City Council... Five-Year Revitalization Plan Established
The ordinance for investigating the actual conditions and revitalizing small-scale publishers in the Incheon area has passed the Incheon City Council plenary session.
The City Council announced on the 1st that the 'Incheon City Local Publishing Promotion Ordinance,' which was proposed by Lee Seon-ok, a member of the Culture and Welfare Committee, was approved at the 2nd plenary session of the 295th regular meeting on the 28th of last month.
The ordinance includes provisions for Incheon City to establish and implement a local publishing promotion plan every five years and to understand the current state of local publishing through actual condition surveys.
Local publishing, where publishers located in the region publish books about the area's history and culture together with local authors, is mostly facing difficulties due to small-scale publishers. As of last year, there were 2,193 registered publishers in Incheon.
Assembly member Lee said, "Incheon ranks third in the nation for the number of publishers after Gyeonggi and Busan, but closures are also increasing," adding, "Through the enactment of this ordinance, we hope to grasp the actual conditions of local publishing, establish long-term plans, record the region's identity, history, and culture, and share them with citizens."
