Car Tax Payment Starts on the 16th... Convenient Online Payment Available on Holidays
1.6 Trillion Won Charged on 16 Million Cases
The payment period for the first half of the year’s automobile tax will begin on the 16th of this month.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 13th that the regular June automobile tax assessment and notification were successfully completed using the next-generation local tax revenue information system introduced last February.
Automobile tax is levied on general vehicles, motorcycles over 125cc, and construction machinery similar to vehicles (such as ready-mix concrete trucks and dump trucks). This time, approximately 16 million cases amounting to 1.6 trillion KRW in automobile tax were assessed.
The payment period for this automobile tax is from the 16th of this month until the 1st of next month. The first half of the year’s automobile tax is imposed on the owner registered in the automobile registration ledger as of June 1. The annual tax amount is split evenly and levied in June and December, but if the annual tax amount is 100,000 KRW or less, the full amount is charged in June.
Automobile tax can be paid through the local tax payment system called Wetax, online bank transfer, or ARS (telebanking), allowing payment during holidays and nighttime. It is also possible to pay by visiting a bank directly.
Taxpayers should first check whether any exemptions or deductions have been applied upon receiving the automobile tax notice. If there are any issues, they can contact the relevant tax authority such as the city, county, or district tax office. It is possible to request a corrected notice or receive a refund for any amount already paid. Persons with disabilities, national merit recipients, and vehicles used for automobile sales by dealers are 100% exempt from automobile tax, while veterans receive a 50% exemption.
